Making Good Use of Pinterest

Pinterest Monday From Musings From A Stay At Home Mom

Pinterest has changed the way I spend my time online.   It has made me much more intentional and productive.   It has changed the way I think about pictures in my blog posts.  I implement more fun ideas in our homeschool.

Bottom line:
I'm in love with Pinterest.

Yes, I'm aware of legalities and have read several articles online.   Right now I'm being careful of what I pin and keeping up with the latest news about Pinterest.

This recent article from MacWorld is very informative -- if you are wondering about the future of Pinterest and what it is good for, you should take the time to read it:

Opinion: Should You Care About Pinterest?

Another GREAT article is from Jimmie, of Jimmie's Collage:

How Pinterest Can Ruin Your Homeschool

Every now and then I like to see what's being pinned from my blog {and isn't it cool when you're looking through your stream and you see something that was just pinned from your blog?}.

Currently, these are the top three pins from Homegrown Learners.

1.  Making Math Fun - Unifix Cubes - This is a post from August, 2010 - and when I look back on it I remember the FUN my little guy had with the Unifix cubes and how he learned addition and subtraction.

2.  Learning About Birds - This post gives our favorite resources (mostly books) for learning about birds.   I'm sure the words on the picture made it more "Pin-able".

3.  Fun With Fractions - This post is quite recent... I think the chocolate subliminally enticed people to pin this one!

I also wanted to share some of my favorite pins - things I've pinned and then done.    There are far to many to count - these just stick out in my mind:

*  Cookies and Cream Cheesecakes - simple and elegant.  They have been a hit whenever I take them someplace.

*  Viking Mask - so easy and effective!

*  2012 IKEA - I've also fallen in love with IKEA over the past month - inspired by this pin and another blogger.

*  How To Clean Your Glass Cooktop - This really works!   My glass cooktop is the cleanest it has been since we moved into our house seven years ago.

*  How to Draw a Castle - I enjoyed doing this just as much as my children did!

*  Ham and Cheese Sliders - My husband LOVES these - these little sandwiches are the key to his heart!

*  A Bag of Bookworms - I loved this idea so much I adapted it for Valentine's Day in our homeschool.

I'm learning to use Pinterest to my advantage - as the online bookmarking tool it should be.   It isn't a time waster for me - quite the contrary.  It saves time because I'm not hunting around for ideas or spending time doctoring my bookmarks bar.

I also try to pin things that are of direct interest to me, and directly from the source.   A lot of repinning and seeing what others are pinning sometimes leaves me feeling a bit empty, know what I mean?

Are you on Pinterest?  If you are, leave me your link so I can follow you!!

Thank you for this post! I have not started using Pinterest yet...I keep tossing it around with the pros/cons. I try to be conscious of how I spend my time on the computer, and I like your ideas on how to best use Pinterest as something that benefits the family and doesn't take away all my time.

Thank you so much for this!! I am a Pinterest lover and user, too. It is there as a bookmarking tool. When people use it as such it isn't a time waster at all. Like you, I have done many things that I have pinned and look forward to continue putting it to use for my advantage, in homeschool, homemaking, and my hobbies.

I think there is a lot of issues surrounding Pinterest right now because it has been mis-used. It is when it's used for self-promotion and other ways other than what it's intended for that it gets out of hand.

I love Pinterest too, and haven't found it to be a time waster. I usually only get the opportunity to get on during the weekends and I'm very picky about the pins I re-pin and the things I chose to pin in the first place. I check links before I re-pin so that I don't have a bunch of things that aren't what they are supposed to be!

Great post Mary, and very timely for me. This past weekend some of the concerns about Pinterest finally made me start re-evaluating it. I am like you...I love using Pinterest as a resource and a time-saving bookmarking tool. One of my sisters, though, has some issues with images of hers being used without her permission. Apparently, once someone pins a photo, Pinterest has permission to use that photo for their own benefit due to the terms of use agreement. I can definitely see where this is a problem. Also like you, I am being very careful with my own pins. I would hate to have to stop using Pinterest!

Nice post! I'm going to have to come back later and explore the links more. I already linked to Jimmie's post and found it worthwhile. Thanks! I recently joined Pinterest and my link is http://pinterest.com/themommyearth/

Mary, I love following you on Pinterest! And I've had so much fun using it as a tool. I haven't had to work very hard at finding fun things to do with T at all :)

I started out using Pinterest only for my own use in pinning things of interest to me, so I was surprised to find that most people I talk to use it in the opposite way - to find pre-sorted ideas collected by others. I've started looking things up that way occasionally, but I find that sort of limits what I can discover online. I prefer a google image search, and use Pinterest to file my favorites :) http://pinterest.com/ginashatney/

A very thought-provoking post. Thanks! I use Facebook for purely personal social networking (I may occasionally share a link to my blog posts, but I use it mostly to keep in touch with IRL friends and family). I've tried to share a few post links on Twitter, but I can never really think of what to say there (other than sharing a link every now and then), because I say other things I want to say on FB (but wouldn't say a lot of the things I say to just my FB friends to be out there on Twitter!).

Pinterest is interesting. I really started using it purely for myself and other than the nice feeling of flattery if someone chooses to follow me, I don't really care so much if I have followers there or not. I only link to it from my blog because it's a convenient way to share links I have found.

I really wish Pinterest had a "private" option or some way to have the pins appear on a public board but not in my "followers" stream. I have filled up the streams of my followers a few times when I was researching an idea (Pi day or star wars ideas for my son's bday party). I was pinning/re-pinning to save ideas for myself to find them later. I feel bad everyone else had to see two dozen links to Star wars birthday parties...but there doesn't seem to be a way around that right now!

Oh, I just realized that I meant to write this comment on today's top ten post...whoops! Feel free to move it there if you like...or I guess it kind of relates to Pinterest too.

I use Pinterest in the place of bookmarks as much as possible. I couldn't organize my bookmarks into subjects so Pinterest makes it much easier to find things. It's been a blast!

Yes I'm on pinterest.
