The Literature Fair - Part 1 (I created a Squidoo Lens!)
Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 3:24PM
The 2012 Homeschool Literature Fair was a great success!
I promised I would write about each of the children's projects. I hope you can gain some ideas for your own homeschool and get inspired to dive even DEEPER into quality living books.
Miss B's book this year was The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong. I have created my very first Squidoo Lens (this has been a goal of mine for several months now!) about the book which you can see by clicking here.
One of Miss B's closest friends won first place in their age group. It did my heart good to see my daughter being more happy for her friend than she was for herself. Her friend (pictured below) dressed up as Effie (from The Hunger Games) and did a fabulous project. (Now, I fall into the category of moms who won't let their children read The Hunger Games, but that is neither here nor there... this child did a great job and deserved first place!)
The requirements for the literature fair included a log book, research report, book report, bibliography, tri fold display board, and a "hands-on" project. My daughter chose to construct and paint a model of the school from her book. She also made all of the characters and a nice little display of tulips (since the book takes place in Holland).
As we walked the fair we took pictures of some of our favorites --- as you can see, some of the upper grades projects were AMAZING! With OVER 70 STUDENT PARTICIPATING, there wasn't time to snap shots of all of them, but these stood out to my children:
Stay tuned later this week for GMan's project - inspired by The Chocolate Touch!

What a great opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time.
YAY for Miss B. Her project looked amazing. I love the tulips. This whole fair looks awesome Mary. Seriously, I love it.
And YOU know your kids better than anyone else. :) I let Keilee read them, but as much as she hates reading, I would probably let her read anything...ok, not ANYTHING, but you know what I mean. :)
What a wonderful project! I love the idea of a literature fair.
We read The Wheel on the School this past fall and I loved it -- one of my favorites we've read this school year.
AWESOME Squidoo unit! Also, I hope to start a Lit Fair with my homeschooling group one day...some day, some day...
Wow, Miss B did a fantastic job :) It looks like the literature fair was a big success!
My girls will not be reading The Hunger Games anytime soon...I haven't even read it myself because I know it's not something I'm up to reading. I suppose sometime I will read it, and I bet the girls will too, but not yet.
I am very impressed with the Squidoo lens! I really like Squidoo, and I've thought about creating a lens, but I didn't have a topic I wanted to do one on. Great job! Was it tough to pull together?
Wow! What a great project! Is this fair something your homeschool group does? I know it would be a lot of work, but it sounds like something my girls would really enjoy and I might not mind helping start in our area. :-)
I've read The Hunger Games series and loved it myself, but my girls won't be reading it for years upon years! :-)
WAY. TO. GO. MISS B. !!!!!!!!!! Great job! And congrats, Mary, on your first Lens.
I loved the Hunger Games. In a disturbing, twisted way. In fact I am re-reading book 1 now before the movie is released next month.....
Grace's friends have all read the series. She felt left out. She begged me to read it. I gave her a brief summary of the plot and told her the choice was hers. She has never picked it up ;-)
This fair is amazing. I love it. I may have to copy it here in CT.......
Wow! She did an amazing job and so did you with your squidoo lens. I read through it yesterday and was inspired. I can't wait to see your sons project. Keep up the great work!
Way to go! A literature fair sounds like a dream to me! Our group only does Science and History, but I am going to propose a Literature Fair!
Off to check out your Squidoo lens....I have a few myself, but I have been very neglectful of Squidoo for awhile.
I LOVE this idea and our homeschool group is planning our first Literature Fair for January. Do you have any links to any specific information on planning one? If you do, I'd really appreciate them. We're currently working on getting our guidelines, etc. together.
