Giving Myself a Break

If you know me personally, you know that I border on being a compulsive type A personality. I think, however, that homeschooling is really showing me the benefit (scrath that, the necessity) of slowing down once in a while. We have been schooling faithfully since the end of July. We have logged 30 days on our attendance roster, so today we are taking the day OFF!

Our holiday weekend was spent with family at the lake. It was such a wonderful time and I came home very relaxed. There's lots to do around the house. You know the drill - laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping. I declared today a work day to get all of that accomplished. Plus, I give piano lessons this afternoon, so it will be a busy day.

Initially I felt guilty about this, but then I reminded myself of a lifelong pattern I have of pushing myself to achieve. Yes, I feel like this trait has gotten me where I am today, but I also want to enjoy where I am today and not stress my kids out by being a slave to the schedule. Isn't that one of the reasons we took them out of school?

This is one of those times when I see just how new we are at homeschooling - I'm still justifying taking a Tuesday off. Oh well, with experience comes wisdom.

Better get going - it's almost 8 a.m. and my little ones aren't out of bed (which shows me they needed the sleep). It's a beautiful morning out there and I'm going to drink my coffee on the deck. Back to school tomorrow, you know!

Mary, oh, we are so much in common, it's nice to be walking this path with you. Last Friday, I was going to get back to school! That same desire to PUSH had me wanting to get started. When I woke up Friday, I saw....no one in our house was ready after our trip. So....basically, we took almost two weeks off. We are rested and will start back today...but, the Principal took me aside last night and said....GO EASY! "Enjoy your day...and if all of the 'work' is not done...that's ok.....our children's hearts are what's important and our Heavenly Father will fill in the gaps!"

Awesome! Enjoy your day off. We so need that every now and then. They are called, "sanity check" days :) You have been awarded the Cherry On Top Award. http://frugalplus.com/cherry-on-top-award/

Oh Mary that is great of you. I will need to take your advice! I too feel guilty if we don't school...but we all need a day "off" now and then! Rock on momma!

No guilt, Mary! Glad you enjoyed your time off! A momma who takes time to break once in a while is a better momma, wife, teacher, friend, etc.!
Good 4 u!

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play! If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favorite book, or in a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents."
