How to Learn Latin

"Latin is a dead language."

How many times have you heard this argument about why NOT to study Latin?

Latin is very much ALIVE and well, and I am so thankful we have the opportunity to be scholars of this intriguing language.

If you're like me I had always toyed with the idea of Latin being an integral part of our homeschool but I just didn't know where to start. I wasn't sure how to learn Latin.

Truthfully, it seemed daunting and I wondered if it was REALLY worth the effort. 

Like most things in life, I'm so glad we just jumped into the study of Latin with both feet, because after one year I can see both of my children reaping enormous rewards!

Interest Led Learning Within a Classical Framework

 

I cannot commit 100% to a specific homeschool model. There are good points in each, and to limit our homeschool to one approach seems short sighted. 

The Classical model, however, works for the MAJORITY of our learning. It provides a framework and structure to our days. Being in Classical Conversations gives us direction and stability.

There are times, however, when we just have to take off on an interest led tangent.

This year I am figuring out how to incorporate interest led learning within a Classical framework. Today's Collage Friday post is a peek into this part of our homeschool.

Why Foundations Memory Work Is Enough

I wouldn't take our Classical Conversations community director's word for it when she said, "Trust me. The weekly memory work is ENOUGH."

In my efforts to make sure my Foundations student was getting "enough" for school, I added a grammar program, writing program, and other various curricula.

After six weeks of Foundations, I am here to report that we have DITCHED almost all of them.
