Sometimes the most meaningful activities are completely spontaneous. Some activities will be remembered and repeated for a LONG time.
Making world landmarks with LEGO bricks was just such an activity.
One afternoon when we were finished with "the essentials", my son had brought his LEGO buckets downstairs where I was working. He asked me if I wanted him to build something for me. I said -- "Sure. Can you try to make some of those landmarks from the flashcards we have been studying?" (Thank you, Target Dollar Spot for the Landmark Flashcards!)
That was the beginning of (literally) a 48 hour obsession with constructing landmarks.
After sharing some of his pictures on Instagram, I asked him to show me his 10 Favorite creations. He would come to me as I was working in the kitchen, we would snap a picture of the latest creation, and he would continue his project.
These flashcards were our memory work for the week. During the first week the children were required to memorize the names and locations of each landmark. The second week they were required to name each landmark and locate it on the globe.
This is HOMESCHOOL at its finest.
Following are my son's Top Ten LEGO Landmarks:
1. Stonehenge
2. Mayan Temple - Chichen Itza
3. The Eifel Tower
4. Leaning Tower of Pisa
5. The Washington Monument
6. The St. Louis Arch
7. Mount Kilamanjaro
(This one is a bit more obscure - but when my son explained it to me it made perfect sense... I love the way a child's eyes look at things!)
8. The Floating Shinto Shrine Gates
9. Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) Statue
10. Diamond Head (The Tuna's Brow)
